Nationwide Boiler news and events, industry updates, technical resources and more. You hear it first on The Nationwide Boiler Blog!

Sometimes boilers are rented in advance for planned maintenance or additional capacity, and other times they are needed immediately in an emergency outage. No matter the situation, Nationwide Boiler has the capacity to provide equipment to support our customers at their best and at their worst.

We received a call on Sunday afternoon from a customer in an emergency situation, with an immediate need for rental equipment. Our Rental Sales Manager, Tim McBride, quickly sent information on two (2) 70,000 lb/hr trailer-mounted boilers that were available from our heaquarters in Fremont, CA. The order was received Monday morning, and we began working diligently to process paperwork, perform outbound equipment inspections, and coordinate shipment. The two units shipped this afternoon, just three days after the initial call, and are on their way to the South. With the help of our partner, ADCO Companies, the equipment will be up and running in no time!

We plan ahead for situations just like this, so we can support our customers through any unexpected outage and provide them with reliable equipment and un-matched service.

Nationwide Boiler and Pacific Combustion Engineering have representatives at two tradeshows this week on opposite sides of the country.

We have Nationwide Boiler's Tim McBride and Pacific Combustion Engineering's Mike Dorthalina in Renton, WA joining boiler owners and vendors at the Western Regional Boiler Association (WRBA) Conference. This conference invites power boiler owners and operators from the West Coast and Canada to gather in one location and network with others in the industry, attend education presentations discussing a wide range of topics, and learn about the newest products to market.

In Baltimore, MD, we have Jim Barbeau and Jaime Cubillos representing Nationwide Boiler at the IDEA Annual Campus Energy Show. This event includes 72 presentations, 100 exhibitors, and 800+ attendees that come together to discuss the latest trends in the district heating realm. Their motto and goal this year is "Sharing Solutions, Sustaining Our Future".

These are two exciting and valuable events that we have come to know very well, and we exhibit at these shows every year. Be sure to visit the Nationwide Boiler table if you will be in attendance at either show; #44 at WRBA and #19 at IDEA. We hope to see you there!

The ribbon cutting ceremony for Mission Linen’s newest facility in Newark, CA is happening today!

The 109,000-square-foot facility is designed to process 1,500,000 pounds of laundry each week and utilizes boiler room equipment provided by Nationwide Boiler Inc. With a silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, the company required equipment that was highly efficient and environmentally friendly.

Nationwide Boiler’s complete, high efficiency boiler room package contains the following equipment:

1. Two (2) Superior 475 hp Steam Boilers, including:
      -  Integral, factory engineered stack economizer mounts
      -  Integral, factory engineered seismic anchoring syste
      -  4-pass, high-efficiency firetube design
      -  150 psi ASME design rating

2. Two (2) Power Flame Burners, including

     - Proven, sub 9 ppm, BAAQMD compliant and ultra low NOx
     - Siemens LMV52 Servo driven air / fuel ratio control with touchscreen operator interface
     - O2 trim
     - Variable speed driven combustion blower motors with rotational feedback
     - UL, CSD-1, Cal Code and NFPA approvals

3. Two (2) Superior 2-stage Stack Economizers, which
     - Provides a 6% efficiency gain and an overall boiler efficiency in excess of 87%
     - Incorporates a compact design within a single, easily installed package
     - Is supported by integral boiler mounts and installed above the stack

4. One (1) Superior Deaerating feedwater System, which
     - Allows for higher feedwater temperatures and increased energy storage
     - Removes harmful, non-condensable gases from the boiler feedwater
     - Captures condensate return energy while reducing flash steam losses
     - Pre-heats boiler feedwater, increasing boiler efficiency and reducing thermal shock

5. One (1) Industrial Steam Surface Blowdown Heat Recovery System, which
     - Cools surface blowdown effluent, benefiting underground drain lines and sewer connections
     - Improves efficiency by utilizing otherwise wasted energy to heat the soft make-up water
     - Recovers otherwise lost flash steam, routing it to the deaerator, reducing pegging steam demand

Nationwide Boiler is proud to support top quality and environmentally conscious businesses like Mission Linen. If you are in the area, take some time stop by their Newark facility today for a tour of their process and boiler room!

We are well into the winter season, which calls for a quick reminder on freeze protection for any boiler equipment installed outdoors, whether it is a temporary rental boiler or your facility equipment. Taking the proper preventative measures will avoid operational difficulties and major damage to your system. During freezing weather conditions, Nationwide Boiler recommends the following:

1. Enclose both the front and rear of the boiler area and use an external heat source to minimize freezing conditions.

2. Install heat tracing with insulation to protect exposed stagnant water lines.

3. Utilize an appropriate heat tracing method (electric or steam tracing) to all of your main lines and piping components. This includes the following lines, which should be heat traced regardless of whether the boiler is in operation or not (in freezing conditions):

a. Sensing lines (steam drum to CRM, high steam, and steam gauge)
b. Auxiliary low-water cut-off
c. Water column
d. Level control blowdown
e. Main and continuous blowdown (depending on length of piping runs)

4. In addition to heat tracing on stagnant sensing lines, drain the lines and fill them with a 50/50 (water/glycol) solution, making sure to re-connect the line.

5. When an extended boiler down time is expected, completely drain the boiler and stagnant water lines.

The above are recommendations, however, be sure to use sound engineering judgement calls when there are concerns of possible freeze damage to the equipment. And remember, with most rental companies, any freeze damage that requires repairs or replacement of boiler components will be the responsibility of the customer, so it is imperative that you take the correct steps to freeze protect your temporary equipment.
