Steam: An Essential Utility, and the Rental Boiler Industry

Rental boilers are often overlooked as a necessity for many processing industries. However, in the midst of a crisis, the need for steam becomes much more apparent to the public eye. In the latest podcast episode from Inside the Boiler Room, ABMA President Scott Lynch discusses the rental boiler industry with Larry Day, Nationwide Boiler's President & CEO. Larry shares his insights on the world of rental boilers, which has significant relevance during the COVID-19 crisis with boilers near capacity at many hospitals and food processing facilities.

Larry and Scott discuss an array of topics, including the importance of rental boilers in times of crisis. As Larry stated, "Anytime there is a natural disaster, rental boilers are looked at almost like generators or air compressors. Steam is a utility, and that's where it comes in as an emergency condition. [Many businesses] need that utility to keep running."

A rental boiler can provide added capacity for increased production needs or it can temporarily replace an existing boiler to keep a plant running. Specific information about the process must be known for the supplier to accurately quote a rental boiler application. This includes:

  •    (1) Boiler Size / Steam Capacity Requirement (typically in HP or lb/hr)
  •    (2) Operating Pressure
  •    (3) Saturated or Superheated Steam Need (if superheat, what temperature)
  •    (4) Fuel Requirement
  •    (5) Any Auxiliary Equipment Needs
  •    (6) Emissions Requirements

Listen to the podcast now to learn more about rental boiler basics, the evolution of the rental boiler industry, and potential challenges with different technology and maintenance of rental boiler systems. Also, be sure to check out the ABMA’s Guideline for Rental Boilers, developed by members of the ABMA Rental Boiler Group, including Nationwide Boiler Inc.

Giving Back When the World Needs it Most

In a time as challenging as what we are facing today, giving back is more important now than ever. Non-profits are being hit hard; annual fundraisers are being cancelled or postponed and donations are lacking due to the financial struggles of the economy. In fact, the team at Nationwide Boiler had to make the unfortunate decision to postpone the 40th Anniversary of our Charity Golf Tournament, an event that now raises an average of $50,000 each year. In 2019, the total raised was split between the ABMA Scholarship Fund and Make-A-Wish® Greater Bay Area.

Make-A-Wish® Greater Bay Area is one of the largest and most productive chapters nationwide. In 2019, they granted 347 wishes for local kids with critical illnesses and assisted with a record-breaking 110 wishes for kids from across the world. Since March, the organization has had the painful task of communicating to families that over 80 wishes are on hold until it is safe to commence.

As CEO Betsy Biern stated, “We’re far from alone in experiencing unprecedented challenges during this global pandemic. In a way, the entire world has become a wish family—we’ve received a terrible diagnosis and must put ordinary concerns aside as we face a new and sometimes terrifying reality. During a time like this, I take even more inspiration from our wish kids and their extraordinary resilience. Like them and for them, we will move forward with as much courage and grace as possible under the most difficult of circumstances. There simply is no other option.”

While the organization is currently postponing wishes, they are still taking and processing wish referrals and have definite plans to grant those waiting wishes. They are even looking into ways to grant children’s true wishes virtually.

With the tournament cancellation a reality, we at Nationwide Boiler were determined to find a way to continue our tradition of giving back. Two months after the original scheduled event and time spent analyzing the effects of the pandemic on our business, Nationwide Boiler is excited to be in the position and able to donate $10,000 to Make-A-Wish® Greater Bay Area. Furthermore, three companies who committed early on to sponsoring our tournament have also chosen to contribute their funds, bringing the final endowment to $12,000. A big thanks to Alzeta, DJ Conley, and Wilkinson Companies! If you are interested and able to help support the cause, too, visit www.sf.wish.org.

Nationwide Boiler’s 40th Annual Charity Golf Tournament is now scheduled for May 6 – 7, 2021 at the Pebble Beach Golf Links. We will resume with our “Back to the Eighties” theme as planned, and all funds raised will be in support of both the ABMA Scholarship Fund and Make-A-Wish® Greater Bay Area.

If you are interested in attending our tournament next year, contact our Tournament Chair, Chelsey Ryker, at golf@nationwideboiler.com to be included in our invite list.

NBI Annual Holiday Food Drives

It’s that time of the year again! Nationwide Boiler’s Annual Holiday Food Drives have officially begun. That’s right, we are holding two separate food drives again this year: a traditional food drive to support the Inter-Faith Treasure House in Washougal, WA and a virtual drive to support the Alameda County Community Food Bank (ACCFB) in California. Last year not only did we meet our goals but we exceeded them, and we look forward to two successful drives again this year.

The Inter-Faith Treasure House helps has provided food and assistance to Camas and Washougal residents in need for over 50 years. Our Controls Division, Pacific Combustion Engineering, will be hosting a drive from now until November 20th with a goal of collecting at least 10 full bags of food.

With the belief that food is a basic human right, the ACCFB distributes millions of healthy meals each year to those in need in the California’s Bay Area. Nationwide Boiler’s virtual food drive allows us to “shop” virtually for the organization’s most needed items. Our goal this year is to raise a total of $500 and, if we can meet this goal, Nationwide Boiler will match the donation, dollar-for-dollar!

We understand the importance of giving back to our communities, especially in a time like this. If you would like to help us meet our goal, you can “shop” or donate an amount of your choice, here: https://www.vfd-accfb.org/grouphome.aspx?ID=7521

We are happy to be able to continue this tradition and help provide healthy meals to those less fortunate this holiday season.

$40,000 Raised at Nationwide Boiler's 40th Annual Charity Golf Tournament

Last year, Nationwide Boiler had to make the hard and necessary decision to postpone our 40th Annual Charity Golf Tournament due to the rapid growth of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, however, is a different story. We were able to coordinate a safe and successful event earlier this month, once again in support of Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area and the ABMA Scholarship Fund. With about two-thirds of our normal attendance, more than 50 sponsors and donors, and no in-person banquets, we are happy to announce that we raised a total of $40,000 for these two outstanding organizations!

The tournament began with a practice round, 4-man scramble at The Links at Spanish Bay, followed by tournament play at the renowned Pebble Beach Golf Links. The weather was near perfect for the two days of golf and after their round at Pebble Beach, guests enjoyed lunch and drinks on the patio right off of the 18th hole.  To comply with local COVID restrictions around gatherings, no in-person banquets were held. While this eliminated multiple revenue streams, it did provide the opportunity for us to incorporate a virtual / online auction for the first time in the history of our event. This new feature allowed those not in attendance with the opportunity to participate, support, and purchase items from our auction. In addition to the virtual auction, we presented golf awards, announced the raffle winner, and played a game of Jeopardy in a virtual fashion via a Zoom meeting. Overall, it was a great week, a successful event, and our guests were happy to be back at Pebble Beach after a year off.

Congratulations to our tournament winners:
Low Gross Champion - Jim Lohmeyer, Blue Cross Blue Shield
Handicap Flight Champion - Vern Eriksen, Nooter/Eriksen
Callaway Flight Champion - Miles Freeman, Heat Transfer Specialists (HTS)

A huge thank-you out to everyone involved! We wouldn't be able to make this happen without the many sponsors, donors, and guests who support us year after year. We are extremely fortunate to be able to continue this tradition of giving back to  organizations that do so much for our community. We did $40K, with 40 golfers for our 40th Anniversary - here's to another 40 years!
